Where is Cayo Ensenachos ?
Cayo Ensenachos is a tiny island of only 1.7 km2 located in the « Jardines del Rey » and more specifically in the Bahia de Buena Vista north of the main island of Cuba.
Cayo Ensenachos is located between Cayo Las Brujas Cayo to the west and Santa Maria to the east. By car, it takes about four hours to get to Havana.
The Sol Cayo Santa Maria was the first hotel (exclusively for foreign tourists) to open its doors in the province of Villa Clara in December 2001. The tourism industry is young in that province of Cuba!
Two airports serve this region. The « Abel Santa Maria » International airport located in the city of Santa Clara, about 1½ hours of paved roads, and the local airport of Las Brujas of about 10 minutes by car, but only for domestic flights. Click HERE to know more about the international airport.
Cayo Ensenachos is located 58 kms from Remedios. The eighth city founded by the Spaniards. On the evening of December 24th, there is a special event called « Las Parrandas », a colorful and unique experience you will not forget if you have the chance to witness this activity. The province of Villa Clara, with an area of 8,400 km2, count more than 817.000 inhabitants and its capital is Santa Clara. There is a former military airfield converted since 2002 into an international airport. It was recently expanded to accommodate tourists from around the world. Santa Clara is home to the mausoleum of the famous guerillo Ernesto "Che" Guevara, with his comrades liberated the city in 1958 during the revolution against the regime of General Fulgencio Batista.
Click HERE to see a table of distances of different places of Cuba from Cayo Santa Maria (and Ensenachos). For your information, we have rented a car to get to Cayo Santa Maria from Cayo Guillermo, and it takes about three hours. As everywhere in Cuba, there are very few road signs, and we must always ask to be sure you will not take the wrong roads.
Aerial photo of Cayo Ensenachos
During our trip to Panama in April 2008, we flew over the area of Jardines del Rey and I managed to take this photo of Cayo Ensenachos under a cloudless blue sky. I then added information on the photo to help recognize all the surrounding islands.
